Cover Letter – Response to Selection Criteria
Industrus Engineering Graduate Program

I am writing to apply for the Graduate Engineer position at Industrus Engineering. As a final-year Civil and Environmental Engineering student at the University of Technology Sydney and a Building Cadet at Hansen Yuncken, I have gained practical experience across estimating, design coordination and site engineering on major projects across the defence, health and education sectors. While working full time, I have maintained a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 80, demonstrating strong discipline, technical capability and commitment to professional development.

Through my cadetship I have developed practical experience in reviewing engineering drawings, supporting cost planning, coordinating technical documentation and working within multidisciplinary project teams. These experiences have strengthened my ability to apply engineering knowledge in real project environments while maintaining strong professional accountability.

3.1 Commitment to ethical conduct and the highest standards of professional accountability

During my cadetship at Hansen Yuncken, I assisted the estimating team in reviewing subcontractor pricing and scope coverage during the preconstruction phase of a major project. My role involved reviewing tender documentation and identifying inconsistencies between subcontractor submissions and the engineering scope requirements. While comparing subcontractor inclusions with engineering drawings and specifications, I identified discrepancies in scope coverage and raised the issue with senior estimators to confirm whether the scope had been fully captured. Addressing the discrepancy prior to contract award prevented potential scope gaps and cost implications during construction and reinforced the importance of maintaining professional accountability and transparency in engineering decision‑making.

3.2 Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with engineers and stakeholders from different fields

In my role as a Building Cadet, I regularly assist with coordination between engineers, architects, subcontractors and the project delivery team. This often involves reviewing updated design documentation and ensuring that design revisions are communicated clearly to both the estimating and delivery teams. By analysing engineering drawings and specifications and working with consultants to clarify technical details affecting constructability, scope and cost planning, I help ensure that technical information is accurately understood across disciplines. Communicating these updates internally ensures that project stakeholders work from consistent information and reduces the risk of misinterpretation of engineering documentation.

3.3 Ability to engage with a creative, innovative and proactive environment

Engineering and construction projects involve managing large volumes of drawings and technical documentation, which requires proactive and organised approaches to information management. While assisting the estimating and project teams, I identified opportunities to improve how project documentation was organised and tracked. I contributed to structuring drawing registers and document tracking systems that improved traceability between design revisions, specifications and estimating information. These improvements enabled the team to locate updated documentation more efficiently and supported stronger coordination between design and estimating processes.

3.4 Demonstrated ability to use and manage information

My estimating work regularly involves analysing engineering drawings, specifications, subcontractor quotes and historical cost data to support project cost planning and tender preparation. I review design documentation to extract relevant quantities and scope information and organise this data into structured spreadsheets and cost breakdowns. Managing this information systematically allows the estimating team to clearly identify cost drivers and maintain accurate cost models throughout the tender process while ensuring that project data remains organised and accessible.

3.5 Ability to manage your own performance in a professional environment

I currently balance full‑time study in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Technology Sydney with my professional role as a Building Cadet at Hansen Yuncken. Managing both responsibilities requires strong time management, organisation and accountability. I developed structured planning systems to manage competing deadlines, prioritise tasks and maintain clear communication with both supervisors and academic staff. Through this disciplined approach I have successfully maintained a WAM of 80 while working and studying full time, demonstrating my ability to manage performance effectively within demanding professional and academic environments.

3.6 Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and show leadership when required

Construction projects rely on strong collaboration between engineers, consultants, contractors and project managers. In my cadet role I work within multidisciplinary teams supporting estimating and project coordination tasks. My responsibilities include reviewing documentation, coordinating technical information and following up on outstanding consultant responses to ensure the team has the information required to progress project tasks. By proactively communicating with team members and assisting in coordinating project information, I contribute to maintaining alignment across the team and supporting efficient project delivery.

I would welcome the opportunity to discuss my application further and demonstrate how my academic knowledge and industry experience align with the Industrus Engineering Graduate Program.

Thank you for considering my application.

Kind regards,

Samara Russell
